![]() ![]() Two major highways cross the county, U.S. Center is named for its location at the geographic center of the county, which lies at 31☄7′ north latitude and 94☁1′ west longitude. The county seat and largest town is Center, which is 160 miles northeast of Houston and forty miles northeast of Nacogdoches. The county is bounded on the south by San Augustine and Sabine counties, on the west by Rusk and Nacogdoches counties, and on the north by Panola County. The building was carefully designed and has much charm. The simple gable roof boasts a small frame cupola with bracketted gables and a weathervane. Twelve prominent wall turrets with rounded caps are reminiscent of chimney stacks. ![]() There are eight rooms on the first floor the second story includes a courtroom and jury rooms.Īlthough built in the 1880s the courthouse has a naive early Victorian quality, related to the Romanesque Revival of the 1850s in the East. Materials which Gibson used included red and grey brick, Rosendale cement, lime mortar, and yellow pine. Today, the Shelby County Courthouse is one of the five oldest courthouses in Texas, and one of the few which retain an almost unchanged appearance and condition. ![]() Total cost was $26,725, and the County Court formally accepted the building February 12, 1886. He designed the courthouse, and began construction in November of 1883. He came to the United States at the age of seventeen, and moved soon after to Shelby County. Gibson was a native of Bally Moore, Eustice County, Clare, Ireland.
